The engine control unit or ECU uses this information to modify ignition timing, air-fuel ratio, transmission shift points and to initiate diagnostic routines. A failing Vehicle Speed Sensor may lead to erratic shifting, inoperable speedometer, check engine light. The Vehicle Speed Sensor may be mounted in the transmission, transfer case or rear differential.
